Hauntings in Iowa

VIRGIN MARY CEMETERY

Location: West Union, Fayette County, Iowa

Official Name: Mount Pleasant Cemetery

Directions: From West Union, go east on Harding Rd. (Hwy 18), turn right on 240th St. (gravel road), turn right on I Ave. The cemetery will be on the immediate left.

It is difficult to fin this cemetery, which sits in a remote part of the open prairie. A few headstones and a couple of trees are silhouetted against the gray sky. The markers are old and worn. Some are broken beyond repair. Many of the names and dates are no longer legible. The anguish of a difficult life on the brutal prairie seems to cry out from the graves. To the back of the graveyard stands a lone statue of the Virgin Mary. Weathered, stained, and showing signs of vandalism, it seems to be keeping a vigilant watch over the dead. She has outstretched hands, as if blessing those who rest in the ground. Beneath her foot is the head of a serpent with a forbidden fruit in his mouth. Rumors are whispered that the statue is haunted and the cemetery is cursed.

1) The eyes of the statue will look at you and follow you.

2) The statue will sometimes move.

3) People who visit the cemetery are sometimes cursed and experience car problems afterwards.

Although I haven't personally made an effort to visit this cemetery...I one day will. And if anyone has actually been here..please comment! I would love to hear your story. :)
