Ghosts and Sleep

A while back, a woman told me a story about a strange event after her husband had passed away.

About 3 weeks after his funeral, she had a dream that her husband came to her and told her that he was fine, that he had just come to check up on her and that he was moving on. She chalked the dream up to wishful thinking and put it in the back of her mind. About a month after that, she was talking to the daughter of her husband from a previous marriage that lived about 500 miles away. She remembered the dream and told it, thinking the other woman might be amused by it and got a sudden silence. Quietly, the daughter asked her what night the dream was on. When they compared notes, these two women had the same dream on the same night about 500 miles apart.

When I thought about it, I realized how many ghost stories start with "I was asleep when..." and go on from there. A majority of my paranormal encounters also involved being woken out of a sound sleep by something out of the ordinary. My guess is that ghosts try to contact us quite often but quickly learn their best chance of being heard is when we let all our guards down and are completely relaxed. For most of us, that only seems to happen when we're asleep. Until then, the majority of us can't or won't hear ghosts even if we want to.
