Grandma's Cookies

Just after graduating from college, I was sent by my parents to visit my brother, a Tulane Law School student in New Orleans. While I thought it was merely a graduation present, they actually wanted me to spy on my brother and his two female roomates, one of which they believed he was dating. The roommates put on a good show, not letting on, so I had no idea. They lived in the bottom floor of a house near the French Quarter and Tulane University. It had four bedrooms. I slept in the extra room, on the floor, as they had no spare beds.

On about the third night, I awoke suddenly and sat up. In the doorway of the bedroom stood an old woman and a young child. She wore an apron and had a plate in her hand. White hair; she reminded me of the stereotype-incarnate of the kindly old grandmother most people think of...like Aunt Bea. The child looked to be about 12 years old. They stood there but made no attempt to interact with me. While I had trouble taking my eyes off them, I did not feel threatened in any way. Rather, I felt a gentle, peaceful feeling. I closed my eyes, having strained to keep them open for so long, and when I opened them the two were gone. I laid back down and wondered if maybe I were dreaming. I soon fell back asleep, which that morning even I thought was weird after seeing something that should not have been in my room.

I told my brother's roommate Amy about what I saw. While she thought little of it having just met me, I began to realize that this was merely the latest in a string of "visions" I had already had during my life. But I could not make sense of it. I returned home thinking little of this experience though I remember all of it's details even now, 20 years later.

About a year after this occurred and after they finally admitted to have been dating, Amy and my brother moved to Cincinnati. While visiting, Amy pulled me aside and said she had found information about the house in New Orleans they had just left. According to Amy, the home was once inhabited by an elderly woman who, while making cookies with her grandson, had left the oven on. A fire killed both tragically. The house was renovated afterward and used to house Tulane students.

Amy and my brother got married, my parents still are upset with me returning from my trip with no "information" about their relationship and apparently grandma is still making cookies. I wonder if the home is still in tact after Katrina.

Something that's similar to one point in your story happened to me while I was in a hotel with my parents:

"I soon fell back asleep, which that morning even I thought was weird after seeing something that should not have been in my room."

I woke up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason (although sleeping in strange places can tend to cause that, I think), but what I saw has still stuck with me. The room was almost completely dark, and at the foot of my bed was a large form, entirely black, looking like it was wearing a monk's cloak with a hood. It seemed to be floating. I could not see its face-- the space within the hood was also pitch black. I recall being surprised by its presence, and slightly nervous as well, but I just closed my eyes and fell back asleep. My parents did not wake up during this time, nor did they have this experience. Everything was fine in the morning.

It just makes me wonder if I woke up because this form was there, or because I was in a strange place (or both?). And I also wonder if I was just seeing things since I had just woken up, or if what I saw was real.

Also, what made me comfortable enough to go back to sleep? I think this also connects well to your point. Usually when I see things (that aren't really there) upon waking, I jolt awake and try to hit the form or run from it. But in this case I just acknowledged it and went back to sleep.
