Strange behavior from a human

My husband got a call from work this past Wednesday telling him that he had to go out of town from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon.. The following Thursday night he received a call from his Sargent informing him that it had been canceled for a really strange reason that I am unable to tell. The following Friday evening was a normal evening. I read my book while my husband worked on his computer. We went to bed at around 11:30pm. I woke to a noise at around 2:30am. I looked out of my window to see a young man getting out of an old car in my driveway. He leaves his car running and walks over to a compost pile, covered with tarps that we had recently had delivered. I wake my husband and we watch (I didn't know if it was one of my son's friends). He walks around the dirt pile looking at it then he walks up to our front door and rings the door bell frantically. I plead with my husband not to answer it. My husband runs to our closet and starts loading his gun. Still not sure of what is going on because of the odd behavior of the man my husband walks downstairs. I look out the window again and I can't see the man but his car is still running and the engine is very loud. My husband runs back up the stairs and picks up the phone, dials 911, and tells me that the man in on our back deck leaning against a rail and looking off into the woods completely relaxed. While my husband is on the phone the man walks around front again. He goes into his car and pulls out a t-shirt and a hanger. He places the t-shirt on the hanger and makes sure that it is nicely hung (strange). Then he walks up to our front door and a few minutes later and then walks empty handed back to our dirt pile. He stands there looking at it and then he walks around our yard gathering sticks. He breaks some of the sticks with his knees and then places the sticks in the dirt in a circle formation. The tallest stick being the thickest. He then gathers the tarp and places it over the dirt but not his formation and pushes little sticks through the holes in the tarp to hold it down. I see him pick up something dark and something that looked like a dish. He walks back to my front door and a minute later he walks back to his car gets in and leaves. We were able to see his licenses plate as he left. He had out of state tags. The whole time my husband is relaying this information to the dispatcher. Finally the police show up. My husband goes outside to speak with him and they walk around looking in the yard and at the house. My husband comes in and tells me that the man had taken my gardening gloves off the back deck and clipped them inside the t-shirt and took the bowl off the back deck that I fed squirrels with and placed them on our front porch strangely. He said the stick formation was really creepy. He also said that while he was speaking with the officer he received a call saying that they were able to stop the car and when they asked the man (which the cop called a kid) why he was at our home and so far away from his. He told the officer that he was following tracks and that they led him to my home. The officer said that he had never heard or seen anything similar to what happened at my home.

Okay, yes all of this could be just something that happened and it has no meaning. But, here is what I know. An unusual situation happened to where my husband couldn't be out of town. My son and daughter were at their friends home for the night. This man drives over 100 miles to my home because the tracks led to my home where he made some strange formation with sticks in the dirt and on my front porch. The one thing that puzzles me most is that I have two dogs. They do not like people at all. Every noise makes them bark, and yes it gets on my nerves, but they didn't make a sound, not one. They laid on the ground or would pace back and forth with their ears raised but they didn't even whine.

We are getting a copy of the police report today so I will be able to find out more information.
