Walking the Table

When I was in high school, our extended family was celebrating Thanksgiving at my Aunt's cabin. It was located in N.E. Texas near the Red River. My mother began telling a story about the grown ups walking the table when she was young. We decided to give it a try. The men in the family laughed and expressed their disbelief. We proceeded anyway. The women gathered around the table, which was a large, heavy, oak table with legs at least 4-5 inches wide. We placed our hands flat and touched pinkies. My mother did the talking. To everyone’s surprise it actually came off the ground, all but one leg. It tapped out two taps for a correct answer and did answer questions. The men were sure we were pressing the table down, so my Uncle put my nephew on the upward corner, but the table didn't go down, it tapped out his age. He was 4 at the time. We never spoke of it again, and I am now 44. Recently at a reunion I asked everyone if they remembered it, as my husband didn't believe the story. They all remembered and gave detail enough that he almost believes me now.
